Students usually get confused with the Rabi and Kharif crops.Which crop is rice,maize,cotton,wheat and others?That is where they put the crop in wrong category. Simply, Rabi is a season which is actually ربیع in arabic and it means a spring.This you can remember in the way that it is the most comfortable and beautiful season which comes just after the winter perishes.That is why our Prophet Muhammad SAW was born in this season. Similarly, Kharif which is خریف in arabic means Autumn and it is the season which comes after the hot summers end.In this season, the trees shed off their leaves. In this context, it is now clear that whatever crops are harvested in spring are Rabi crops. Examples: wheat, barley, oats, gram, mustard, linseed. And, the crops which are harvested in the season of Autumn or close to it are Kharif crops. Examples: rice, maize, millet, ragi, pulses, soybean, groundnut,tea, coffee,cotton,sugarcane,jute.
